Intro

The Smart Reporting solution enables a significant increase in the efficiency of the reporting process. It is also applicable for the daily clinical reporting routine at Fonte Imagem which is dominated by reports for endometriosis, lung nodules as well as cancer in reproductive organs.

The Story

Medical findings are usually reported using free text. However, this can lead to inconsistency in the reports and often makes it challenging for the referring physician to decipher the results. The COVID-19 crisis has shown how important accurate and consistent structured reports are, when coming to clinical conclusions under time-critical circumstances.

With the aim of structuring medical data and increasing the use of structured reporting, Smart Reporting offers a free template in multiple languages to report pulmonary opacities in the case of COVID-19. This template attracted global attention and motivated Dr. Luciana Belém from Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) to reach out to Smart Reporting offering her expertise to translate the template to Brazilian Portuguese.

This laid the foundation for a long-term collaboration, resulting in the continuous translation of oncological content. The development of a new MRI endometriosis template is also planned in a collaborative effort, which will benefit from the extensive experience of Dr. Belém and her colleagues.

Dr. Belém shared the structured reports with her team in the private clinic Fonte Imagem. The oncological templates in Brazilian Portuguese sparked the interest of other physicians in the clinic.

In total five experts joined the collaboration, all of whom are long-term specialists in the field of internal medicine using MRI and CT.

The team reported that accessibility to the oncological templates brings a variety of benefits, especially for findings that follow a clear structure like prostate exams. “As the findings are guideline-driven (such as PI-RADS) and also available in Portuguese in a structured and machine-readable data format, further data processing is easily possible and provides a basis for scientific evaluations.", says Dr. Alice Brandão, head of the imaging department. She is a well-known and recognized radiologist in Brazil and author of several books addressing pelvic and breast imaging.

The teams’ knowledge about endometriosis reporting will be of great value when partnering further to create a workflow-adjusted template. Certain aspects, which are crucial for an endometriosis report, are covered within the structured report. These include key anatomical relations of the endometriotic lesions as well as imaging features that can change the surgical technique, resulting in a more efficient and accurate workflow throughout various teams and departments as well as a high degree of standardization and consistency.
