As more information has become available and the virus has spread even among asymptomatic individuals, it's become clear that early detection is paramount to controlling the outbreak and treating the patients. Unlike severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) or Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS), medical imaging experts have found that the main difference in terms of detection is that COVID-19 tends to manifest in both lungs rather than one.
“The number of people who have fallen ill or died from the Coronavirus has exponentially increased in recent weeks and the radiologists will probably play a major role due to the sensitivity in diagnosing COVID-19 with chest CT scans. This template provides guidance for the diagnosis of COVID-19,” says Prof. Dr. med. Hans-Ulrich Kauczor, M.D.
This template provides a structured approach to report abnormal findings on chest CT, focusing on the different patterns of pulmonary opacities. Within this template, we highlight findings that may be associated with COVID-19 affecting the lung.
"As patients with pneumonia due to COVID-19 were shown to have lung abnormalities on their chest CT even on initially negative Real-Time PCR (RT-PCR), chest CT might contribute as an early diagnostic and a monitoring tool for COVID 19 Pneumonia. A structured approach and outline of typical COVID-19 features on chest CT may facilitate clinical decision-making in the early stages," explains Prof. Dr. med. Julien Dinkel.
